Riverlinx consortium kick-starts sustainable careers for local people in London boroughs – including more than 100 apprenticeship opportunities

Riverlinx, the consortium delivering Silvertown Tunnel, is kick-starting careers for local people, offering a range of jobs, including more than 100 apprenticeship opportunities, to build sustainable careers.

Riverlinx is employing more than 100 apprentices across the lifecycle of the project. Every single aprentice will develop skills, support the delivery of the project and gain valuable experience of on-site operations  while completing a degree equivalent qualification.

Riverlinx apprentices are recruited through the partners of the consortium (BAM Nuttall, Ferrovial Construction and SK Ecoplant), ensuring that  employment and career development will continue once the Silvertown Tunnel is completed.

Jamela-Renee, local resident and Riverlinx civil engineering technician apprentice: ‘At first, I didn’t know what type of job to look for, but I knew I wanted to do something positive to impact people and the world around me. When I heard about careers in engineering, it really appealed to me. I like being part of the team on-site, seeing progress in different areas of the project. And, in the future, I’ll see the end result, and be able to go past and say ‘I helped build that building, or that tunnel, or that bridge.”

“My favourite thing is that there’s something new happening every day. On such a big project, every day is different and I meet lots of new people. We might be boring a tunnel - but I’ve never felt bored!”

On a project the size of the Silvertown Tunnel, apprenticeships and jobs are offered across a wide choice of careers - not just in engineering and construction. Ranging across health & safety, environmental, data analytics; finance, planning, administrative office support - there are opportunities for everyone and roles to suit all skill sets.

Farhana, Riverlinx Human Resources (HR) apprentice: “I love working with people and although my role is about supporting others, everyone here is so helpful. It’s really nice to feel like an important member of the project team.”

“My typical day includes attending team meetings, taking candidates through the application and interview process when they see a job they’re interested in, and getting new starters on-board. I also work with local schools and visit pupils to explain what subjects link with different jobs our company and our industry need in the future.”

Working in local schools is not unique to Farhana’s role. Many Riverlinx employees spend time virtually or visiting schools and colleges, helping students identify their own passions and strengths, and see how they can lead to rewarding careers.

Riverlinx commits to advertising all apprenticeship and employment opportunities with the local London boroughs. Residents of Newham, Greenwich or Tower Hamlets can access the opportunities available by contacting the boroughs’ employment service to register their interest. Positions are advertised via the boroughs 10 days prior to wider publication on Riverlinx and parent company websites and social media channels.
